Salaysay, Saysay, Salukoy: Tungo sa Dalumat ng Alamat
CHRISTIAN JIL R. BENITEZ
Abstract
SUMMARY
The Filipino alamat is theorized presently as a thing that considers time in terms of the ecological. In working through key western conceptualizations of myth, i.e. those of Mircea Eliade, Eric Dardell, and Roland Barthes, myth here is rehearsed in the vernacular as the alamat, sensed as an intense instance of narration that is always only made present in its material encounter with alamat and materiality is further intensified in evaluating the reciprocation between narrative act (nagsasalaysay) and sense-making (nagpapasaysay): the alamat, through narration, as creative of the world, and the earth, through contextualized instances of repetition, as creative of the alamat. The alamat thus conceived, is shown to transgress the customary and binary classifications of time as either sacred (banal) or profane (dahay), with a wager made on a phenomenology of time through the metonymic kasalukuyan (“present”) that is always maalamat (“mythic”), and thus always troping toward depth and the material.
