Abstract

This paper engages in discovery as a trope that continues to characterize encounters with Indigenous People through a critical reading of the novel You’re My Shining Star (2017), a romance pocketbook by Sofia inspired by the instant social media fame of Carrot Man (Jeyrick Sigmaton) in 2016. The trope of discovery is defined as a relentless act borne by colonialism which involves the (re)production of images of Indigenous People as historical artifacts. Because the novel represents indigeneity in this manner, it must be examined for its capacity to shape popular consciousness. The analysis focuses on the portrayals of Igorots as part of ongoing discovery, specifically through the three encounters between Sunny, the female protagonist, and the Igorot characters in the narrative composed of: Hero, the male protagonist; the Lambayans, members of an Indigenous community, and Carrot Man (Jeyrick Sigmaton), the novel’s inspiration. The paper probes into the portrayals in the novel and points out the prevailing perspective on the Igorot as reminders of a precolonial past incapable of change and development. It also reveals that despite the novel’s attempts to complicate the depiction of the Igorot as prehistoric, the notion of discovery which propels the narrative necessitates that the Indigenous must be situated in the past.

Inilalarawan ng papel na ito ang nagpapatuloy na pagtuklas sa Katutubo sa pamamagitan ng mapanuring pagbasa sa nobelang You’re My Shining Star (2017) ni Sofia, isang romance pocketbook na pinukaw ng pagsikat ni Carrot Man (Jeyrick Sigmaton) noong 2016. Binibigyang-katuturan ang tropo ng pagtuklas bilang isang walang ampat na gawaing inianak ng kolonyalismo at kinasasangkutan ng (re)produksiyon ng mga imahen ng mga Katutubo bilang artifak ng kasaysayan. Lumalahok ang nobela sa tropong ito kaya mahalaga itong suriin bilang pagpuna sa representasyon ng pagkakatutubo na mayroong kapasidad na hubugin ang kamalayang popular. Nakatuon ang suri sa mga paglalarawan ng mga katutubong Igorot bilang bahagi ng nagpapatuloy na pagtuklas, partikular ang tatlong pagtatagpo sa pagitan ni Sunny, ang bidang babae, at mga tauhang Igorot sa naratibo na sina Hero, ang bidang lalaki; ang mga Lambayan, miyembro ng isang pamayanang Katutubo; at si Carrot Man (Jeyrick Sigmaton), ang inspirasyon ng nobela. Ipinakikita sa suri ang mga paglalarawan sa nobela na nagpapakita sa sabay na pagtanaw sa Igorot bilang paalala ng isang nakaraang prekolonyal at bilang mga entidad ng kasalukuyan ngunit walang kapasidad na magbago at umunlad. Bagaman mayroong mga pagtatangka ng pagtunggali sa paglalarawan ng Igorot bilang prehistoriko, mas matingkad ang nakaraan bilang lunan ng Katutubo sapagkat ito ang saligan ng tropo ng pagtuklas na siyang pangunahing salik ng naratibo.
