Abstract

I highlight E. Arsenio Manuel as one of the foremost scholars in folklore studies by opening discussions on his research
concerning the Filipino identity, shaped by his experience as a student under the American curriculum. Simultaneously,
I endeavor to revisit the foundational contributions of Jose Rizal and Isabelo de los Reyes as earlier scholars who engaged
in discourses on folklore, given how frequently Manuel cited and referred to them across his nearly two hundred published
works. As a concluding reflection, I present selected readings of Manuel’s seminal research and studies about him, calling for a
deeper understanding of his role (and that of folklore) within the evolving complexities of discourses on Philippine Studies.

Itinatampok ko si E. Arsenio Manuel bílang isa sa mga nangungunang iskolar sa folklore o kaalámang-bayan sa
pamamagitan ng pagbubukás ng mga talakayan tungkol sa kanyang mga pananaliksik hinggil sa identidad na Filipino
na nagmulâ sa pagiging mag-aarál sa ilalim ng Americanong kurikulum. Samantála, sinikap kong buksan ang maikling talakay
kina Jose Rizal at Isabelo de los Reyes bílang mga naunang iskolar na sumuong din sa usapíng folklore, gayong madalás
siláng sipiìn at basáhin ni Manuel kung gagalugarin ang hálos dalawandaan niyang limbag na pag-aaral. Pamutat naman ang
ilán kong pagbása sa mga natatanging saliksik ni Manuel at mga saliksik din tungkol sa kaniya para ipanawagan ang mas malalim
na pag-unawa sa papel ni Manuel (at ng folklore) sa patúloy na kasalimuotan ng mga diskurso sa Aralíng Filipino.
